Attended by 14 young athletes from Addo, including four staff members of Khulasande Sports Development, the workshop focused on emotional regulation, coping skills, and career decision-making.
It also aimed to equip them with the confidence, resilience, and self-awareness which is necessary for both their personal growth and sporting journey. Additionally, it provided coaches with valuable tools to better support the holistic development of the athletes in their daily practice.
“The significance of hosting this initiative on 18 July 2025 was for the Missionvale Campus Psychology Clinic’s contribution to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s birthday in aid of the 67 minutes campaign.” Said Bianca Frieslaar, Community Coordinator at the Psychology Clinic.
During the session, athletes were introduced to the importance of understanding and regulating emotions and how to foster resilience by implementing healthy coping strategies.
The session was interactive as a space was created for both facilitators and athletes to talk, ask questions, and several activities were implemented, which added an element of laughter and fun for the athletes.
“The workshop was essential as it created a safe and supportive environment where young athletes could openly express themselves and strengthen their emotional well-being.” Said Thobela Mdyesha, one of the coaches.
The staff members of the NGO also said that they learnt how to communicate under pressure, the importance of talking and not bottling up one’s problems and realising that you are not the only one with problems.
Sessions were facilitated by Fihliwe Klaas (Counselling Psychologist); Relebogile Matsitse (Student Counselling Psychologist); Nichòle Mac Kiedann (Chairperson, Psychology Society); Bianca Frieslaar (Community Coordinator), and Uyanda-Umlibo Mangcunyana (Vice-Chairperson, Psychology Society)
